Boys Basketball in home stretch of regular seasonTuesday, February 10, 2015 While this winter is giving us nothing but cold and snowdrifts, the high school basketball season is heating up. Several of the area’s boys teams are still working their way toward a spot in the state tournament, while others are fighting for the best seed possible and a chance at home games in the early rounds which would make the bracke more palatable. Newington has the most impressive resume so far, sporting a 14-2 record. The Indians entered another snowy Monday second in Class L rankings, trailing only New London and tied in the loss column with Middletown and Career. It’s been nearly a month since the Indians last fell, suffering a wild defeat at the hands of New Britain on Jan. 13. They have responded with an eight-game winning streak, but their road to the top of the L bracket is fraught with danger. The Indians have a rematch with New Britain on the road scheduled for tonight, then get a week off, which can be both good and bad at this time of year. Newington doesn’t want to be rusty before facing suddenly surging Southington. The final two games are against Berlin, which provides matchup trouble with its size, and a trip to Northwest Catholic, which is never easy even when Northwest Catholic is having a down year by its standards. Newington could end up with 17 or 18 wins, but it will take some work and good play.
