Boys Basketball remains unbeaten

Sunday, January 3, 2016

Despite finding itself down 20-19 at the end of the first quarter, Newington took control of the game the rest of the way, outscoring the Hornets 57-46 in the remaining three quarters of play including 39-34 in the second half.

Jared Simmons scored a game-high 32 points, which included four three pointers. But the junior guard did more than just score as he notched 13 assists as well giving him a double-double on the night.

Nick Guadarrama and Pablo Ortiz both contributed 11 points with Ortiz recording his second double-double in as many games after pulling down 13 boards.

“Our bigs do a great gob,” Newington head coach Scot Wenzel said. “Pablo had a great night. He and Brett Frank did a good job of controlling the boards and containing [Josh] Williams who is a real good player.”

Connor Buckley also contributed nine points to the Indians’ winning effort hitting three shots from beyond the arc.

Free throws were also key for Newington has the team hit 17 on the night.
