Boys Basketball defeats Bristol Eastern

Friday, January 10, 2014

The Newington boys basketball team led 40-31 after three quarters against Bristol Eastern Wednesday night, and while the Lancers made a push in the fourth quarter, some clutch free throw shooting helped the Indians hang on for a 63-59 victory at Newington High School.

Eastern (2-3) outscored Newington 28-23 in the final frame, but the Indians (2-3) hit 15-of-19 free throws in the fourth quarter alone in order to earn their second win of the season.

“I thought we played very well. I was very happy with our play tonight,” Newington coach Scot Wenzel said. I thought we played a good game against a very athletic team.”

In total, the Indians hit 22 free throws on the night to the Lancers’ 13. Jared Simmons hit 12 shots from the charity stripe for Newington.

Simmons made just two field goals, but his 12 points from the line helped him score 17 points on the night. Marcus Guadarrama led all Indians with 22 points of his own, including seven from the free throw line. Edwin Gomez also pitched in with 11 points for Newington.

Daron McKoy was the only player to score in double-figures for Eastern. McKoy made five 3-pointers en route to a 24-point night, which led all scorers. Kevin Love was the next closest to double-figures with nine points.

Newington was consistent in the scoring column throughout most of the night and its defense in the third quarter helped the Indians pull away.

Leading just 30-27 at halftime, Newington held Eastern to just four points in the third quarter. While the Indians had just 10 in the third quarter they still went into the fourth with a nine-point lead.

Newington made four 3-pointers on the night, one each from Guadarrama, Gomez, Simmons and Evan Mach.

The Indians next take on Hall at home on Friday night at 7 p.m. while the Lancers play at Plainville tonight at 7 p.m. as well.
