Boys Basketballl loses a heartbreaker

Friday, January 31, 2014

Simsbury 62, Newington 61: Trailing by 13 heading into the fourth quarter, the Indians needed to make a push in order to take down one of the best teams in the CCC. Newington did just that, coming all the way back and even taking a one-point lead with 30 seconds left in the fourth quarter.

It was not meant to be, however, as Simsbury’s Nate Medve scored with just 10 seconds left and the Indians were unable to get anything to go on the other end.

“You can say it was a heartbreaking loss,” Newington coach Scot Wenzel said. “I’m very proud of how the kids responded in the second half. They battled all the way back and played their butts off tonight. It was a gut-wrenching loss, but the kids left it all out on the floor.”

Marcus Guadarrama had a huge game for the Indians (5-7), scoring 23 points and grabbing 16 rebounds on his way to a double-double. Zach Tinkham hit three 3-pointers and scored 13 points while Jared Simmons scored 11 points for Newington

The Trojans (12-1) got a big game from E.J. Crawford who had 22 points while Walter Whyte and Medve and 18 and 12 points respectively in the victory over Newington.
