Friday, February 7, 2014

SOUTHINGTON — Zach Tinkham is one of the Newington boys basketball team’s best outside shooters, and he showed in Thursday night in a big 85-73 overtime victory over Southington.

Tinkham hit one of his five 3-pointers to start the overtime period, jump-starting the Indians, who scored 17 points in the extra quarter alone at Southington High School. Tinkham also took two big charges in overtime, one of which was called on Blue Knights leading scorer Pat Freer who fouled out on the play.

Tinkham finished the night with a game-high 27 points while Freshman Jared Simmons scored 22 for Newington. Marcus Guadarrama had a solid day as well with 18 points. The Indians had just five players score all of their points. Edwin Gomez also had 10 while Evan Mach pitched in with six.

Guadarrama picked up yet another double-double, grabbing 10 rebounds to go along with his 18 points. Simmons had an all-around strong night with seven rebounds and five assists to go with his 22 points.

Freer led the way for Southington with 21 points, including three 3-pointers. Mike Pagano added 15 and Matt Sorrentino also hit three 3-pointers on his way to a 12 points.
