Boys Basketball defeats BerlinFriday, January 27, 2017
NEWINGTON — It was a close game up until the very end, but the Newington boys basketball team was able to top Berlin in the end. In a game that features two of the best players in the area in the Indians’ Jared Simmons and the Redcoats’ Spencer Duke, the matchup did not disappoint. Duke finished the night with 23 points and Simmons 24 as Newington won 57-51 Thursday night. But the Indians as has been the case all season, got plenty of help from their big man in Matt McKinnon, who finished with another double-double as he scored 19 points and pulled down 10 boards. Dylan Frisk was the only other Berlin player in double-figures with 10 points on five shots. Newington jumped out to an early 18-6 lead after the first quarter, but the Redcoats managed to battler their way back in the second. Still, the Indians managed to take a 29-20 lead into the locker room at the half. But Berlin seemed to carry its momentum into the third quarter, outscoring Newington 17-12. In the end, it was a close fourth that Indians managed to hold to pick up their seventh win of the season. The Redcoats, meanwhile, fall to 5-7.
